... From: Aeon VI:1 (Feb 2001) Home | Issue Contents In Memoriam: Roger Williams Wescott April 28, 1905 - November 21, 2000 L. M. Greenberg The passing of Roger Wescott this past November marked a major loss to the scholarly world at large and the Velikovsky camp in particular. A true polymath, Professor Wescott was a voracious reader and prolific author whose published works numbered in the hundreds. Equally at home in the fields of linguistics and anthropology, Professor Wescott was also eminently capable when it came to dealing with the subjects of catastrophism, myth, and prehistory. He was a consummate academician who founded various departments and programs along with serving ...

... From: SIS Chronology and Catastrophism Workshop 1992 No 1 (Aug 1992) Home | Issue Contents REVIEWS Getting it Together by Roger Wescott, (The University of Tennessee at Chatanooga, 1990) This is a series of 6 lectures and 6 lovely poems, linking the Humanities to one another and to the Sciences. Roger Wescott is a lover of words and a master of their use, choice and organisation and reading his book is a learning experience. He is also fond of neologisms - e.g . anomalistics, incaninity etc - proof of his belief in language as a living, thriving entity. If no word fits the bill, invent one. The subjects covered ...

For those unacquainted with Wescott's work it remains to be said that he spent his working life mainly in the field of linguistics and his many publications come with a deserved authority in this discipline. In less orthodox fields he was an eager Velikovskian ...

Ever since the journal Stonehenge Viewpoint introduced me to the work of the late Isaac Vail, I have thought it likely that most solar planets, including our own, either have, or have had, ring systems. Vail's pioneering work has been undeservedly neglected by most catastrophists, with the notable exception of Milton Zysman whose "mirror dome" concept presupposes a vanished terrestrial ring. [2 ...

Wescott AN ETYMOLOGICAL EXCURSUS The word "etymology" is of Classic Greek origin and may be literally translated as "true meaning". The Greeks, like most other ancient peoples, believed that when a word changed meaning over time (as most words do), the earliest known meaning was the most reliable meaning - if not, indeed, the only valid meaning. This attitude toward usage, though less wide-spread than it used to be, is still prevalent among purists, who tend to decry all semantic change. Among descriptive ...

... Quantalism: the Big Picture Roger Williams Wescott The assigned title of my oral presentation to the 1994 Kronia Symposium was "Velikovsky: The Big Picture." In it, I called attention to the etymological fact that Immanuel Velikovsky's surname is a patronymic derivative of the Russian adjective velik, "great." This Slavic word, in turn, comes, by way of Proto-Indo-European, from a reconstructed Nostratic root *wal-, "strong." Among the English derivatives of this root are three words that come to us through Latin (rather than through early Germanic): valor, value, and validity. This lexical material gives us even more reason-if more is needed- ...
