... of documentary programs for BBC Television in London. In 1970 I formed Biologic of London- a science consultancy that designed zoos, organized expeditions and ran a safari company. I personally led expeditions to Indonesia, the Indian Ocean, the Antarctic, New Guinea, the South Pacific and the Amazon, and still do from time to time. But my life changed radically in 1973 with the publication of Supernature, which sold more than a million copies. That gave me a freedom I still enjoy- to travel widely, following whatever strange gods may call, reporting what I find along the way. A process that has led to a series of more than twenty books. From 1982 to 1994, I lived on an ocean-going boat, a converted shrimp trawler named Amazon. Right now, I am between boats and based in a restored farmhouse set high above the ocean on a wild part of the rocky coast of West Cork in Ireland. Premise I have no philosophy to sell. No preconceived idea about how the world works, or who we really are ...

52. The Candelabra Of The Andes [Science Frontiers Website]
... Science Frontiers ONLINE No. 102: Nov-Dec 1995 Issue Contents Other pages Home Page Science Frontiers Online All Issues This Issue Sourcebook Project Sourcebook Subjects The candelabra of the andes 595 feet from top to bottom and visible far out at sea. What was the purpose behind this strange geoglyph? One of the most engimatic giant ground drawings (or "geoglyphs") in South America is seen best from several miles out at sea. Etched into a sloping hill at Pisco Bay on the Peruvian coast, this strange figure looks vaguely like a candlestick; thus, its name "The Candelabra of the Andes." The Candelabra is 595 feet long and can be seen from as far as 12 miles out to sea. Pottery found near the figure has been carbondated at 200 BC and is assignable to the Paracas Culture. Separated by 130 miles from the Nazca Plain, with its famed giant figures, the Candelabra apparently is not the work of the Nazca people. It is puzzling why that such a figure would be placed where it could be seen best by sailors ...

... the unified kingdom at the time of the expulsion of the Hyksos.' [7 The evidence, in the words of Frank Stub- bings, seems to suggest that 'forces from Greece may have served in Egypt, against the Hyksos, as mercenaries.' [8 But to state that the 18th Dynasty rose to power with Greek help raises enormous problems. Quite apart from the fact that Greek intervention in Egypt at the beginning of the conventionally dated 18th Dynasty (16th century BC) is historically impossible, there seem to be strange- indeed incredible- parallels between this early Greek intervention and the later intervention in the time of Psammetichus. For whilst Psammetichus, in the 7th century, used Greek mercenaries to overcome internal enemies, expel the Assyrians and establish a great empire, so the 18th Dynasty apparently used Greek mercenaries to overcome internal enemies, expel the Asiatic Hyksos (the 'Rulers of Foreign Lands'), and to establish a great empire. Could it be then, as conventional scholarship believes, that these parallels are mere coincidence, and that Greek ...

... From: Horus Vol. 2 No. 3 (Fall 1986) Home¦ Issue Contents The Strange Phenomenon of Solar Prominences Alban Wall We are all familiar with the fact that clouds often assume the shapes of recognizable objects such as ships, people or animals. Though some of them can appear very realistic indeed, most times these ephemeral phantasms depend upon the observer's imagination as to what the cloud resembles; one viewer may see as a ship what another regards as a castle or some other figure. A similar phenomenon occurs when huge clouds of superhot gases, a deep scarlet in color, are ejected high into the sun's atmosphere. Called solar prominences, these gaseous ejecta are divided into two general types, quiescent and eruptive. The former most often appear as immense clouds that may spread out for many thousands of miles over the surface of the sun and rise to considerable heights, changing shape slowly and lasting for as long as 3 or 4 weeks [see cover photo, KRONOS IV:4. Eruptive prominences, on the other hand, shot violently ...

Science Frontiers ONLINE No. 101: Sep-Oct 1995 Issue Contents Other pages Home Page Science Frontiers Online All Issues This Issue Sourcebook Project Sourcebook Subjects Strange phenomenon detected by radars and satellites January 12, 1994. Near Monte Vista, Colorado. At 2:55 PM local time, radars of the North American Aerospace Defense Command and satelliteborne instruments detected an unexplained "heat-radiating" phenomenon. Some sort of fire or explosion was suspected, but air and ground searches by local authorities turned up nothing. Possibly relevant: On the night of January 15, a Rio Grande County sheriff's deputy on patrol saw three helicopters, two with large strobe lights, apparently searching the suspect area. Military officials denied having any craft in the area. (Anonymous; "Officials Baffled by Spectacle on Radar," New Mexican, January 27, 1994. Associated Press item. Cr. P. Viemeister) Comment. Infrared sensors on satellites could detect "heatradiating" phenomena, but it is unclear what groundbased radars "saw." If some kind of military operation were involved, ...

January 13, 1991. Caribbean Sea. Aboard the m.v. Trinidad and Tobago. "At 0210 UTC whilst the ship was proceeding eastwards along the north coast of Trinidad, a relatively bright patch was noticed in the almost cloudless sky and was thought to be a cluster of stars. Its bearing was approximately 300 at an elevation of about 50, and closer inspection through binoculars revealed a rather strange phenomenon, as shown in the sketch. "The bright patch was a perfect circle of a bright, light-blue colour and was transparent as stars could be seen through it. There was also a trail from the circle which looked like the track a disc would describe if it moved through an arc. This trail was also of light-blue colouration but was not nearly so bright as the circle. The entire phenomenon dissipated after about five minutes." ...

Hippos have always seemed to be consummate herbivores; but in Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe, one killed an impala that had fled into a pond in order to escape a wild dog. It tasted good, and soon ten other hippos were enjoying a communal feast. (Anonymous; "Carnivorous Hippos," Natural History, 108:23, April 1999.) A Mom's Duty. The females of a small European spider, Amaurobius ferox, actively encourage their freshly hatched spiderlings to kill and eat them. The moms press against the clustered young soliciting what is called "matriphagy," or "mother-eating." (Anonymous; "Having Mom for Dinner," Natural History, 108:21, April 1999.) Bears Like Hondas. ... solar rather than a polar configuration? Charles Raspil thought a solar flare-up would lead to a lot of energy coming out of the magnetotail of the earth. This would impinge on the ionosphere, giving more visible effects. Some sort of configuration in the past may have been located at the North Pole. Perhaps it was Saturn and the other planets, or perhaps it was just some sort of magnetic field-type structure. However from time to time right up to the present century, if you look at the Charles Fort material, these strange objects have been entering the Earth's atmosphere. Perhaps even now some UFO phenomena could be explained by them as well. There seems to have been a dampening effect. It seems in the past there was a greater amount of energy available, for whatever reason, and these things have decreased over time. Q2. ... peaceful and prosperous time the Ancient Egyptians had ever seen. Yet many historians, archaeologists, and especially theologians regard the period as traumatic for all Egypt, although it is nearly impossible to reconstruct any details. [3 Why? I hope here to shed some light on this dark period of history, perhaps the result of a long conspiracy to let it remain so. Archaeologists and Egyptologists are finally doing some important work in this area, and the public is beginning to learn some of the hidden secrets involved. It may be strange for us in the twentieth century to understand how bygone cultures in early civilizations would give up everything-- their freedom, for example-- for "gods," the trusted four-footed animals we take for granted. According to Josephus [4 this most civilized country even built temples to horses and worshiped them, after having turned their sovereignty over to the foreigners who brought them. The fact remains, however, that they believed certain animals were sacred, as demonstrated in their mythology and confirmed by modern historians. Sir Flinders ...

"...the recent Phobos probe that the Russians sent to Mars in 1988-- which met a mysterious and untimely demise-- recorded two quite mysterious Anomalies on the planet before contact was lost with the satellite. One was a strange shadow moving across the planet's surface (not a shadow of either of Mars' moons)! The other anomaly was a strange grid-like pattern at one location on the Martian surface; it was photographed with an infrared camera on Phobos 2, the first such instrument carried on a spacecraft sent to Mars."
