... Home | Issue Contents When the Gods Came Down by Alan F. Alford Hodder & Stoughton, London, 2000 £20 Reviewed by Alasdair Beal Alan Alford's first book, Gods of the New Millennium, followed in Zecharia Sitchin's footsteps, arguing that ancient gods such as Enlil and Marduk were actually extraterrestrial aliens from another planet who brought civilisation, pyramids (which were really giant fuel cells) and atomic warfare (see review, C&CR pp. 50-51). Alford has come a long way since then and his latest book rejects the idea of alien invaders, looking for other explanations for ancient legends which are closer to the ideas of modern catastrophism. As before, the ...

... risen up the administrative as well as military ranks. It is expected that many other tombs of both major and minor officials await discovery in this area. The recent finding of the tomb of the High Priest of the Aten close to that of Horemheb is reported in Geoffrey Martin's third talk . The tomb is in the vicinity of the Step pyramid and courtyard of Djoser, in a large area identified as containing 18th and early 19th dynasty tombs in the middle of the 19th century. However, it has only recently been opened for systematic exploration. In this era Memphis is thought to have been the administrative capital, hence the burial of court officials. Officials' tombs seem to ...

... people were more or less unprepared, for the measures taken with the lesser floods were useless in face of it. Nevertheless, elaborate preparations must have been made by far-seeing rulers in certain parts of the world. On most of the Pacific Islands, for instance, we find remarkable ancient stone platforms, some of which might be called truncated pyramids, and other buildings, massively built of huge stones neatly joined without mortar. They are situated on islands which are scattered over an area of many million square miles. They have evidently not been built upon the islands in their present island' form, but on the mountain peaks of one, or several, submerged Pacific Continents; ...
