... . This replacement was necessary because 1) no known physical mechanism including magnetic fields could have conserved electric charges on any two planetary bodies sufficient to neutralize a detectable fraction of their mutual gravitational attraction, (2) and 2) a mechanism existed which could generate global magnetic fields on any two planets strong enough to repel each planet from the other against their mutual gravitational attraction. The Boomerang Nebula exhibits the bipolar symmetry that has become typical of planetary nebulae: two cones or, often, bubbles of material radiate away from the central star (which is often a double star). In most nebulae, the plasma is sufficiently dense and excited to emit light. But the Boomerang Nebula is cold: Radio measurements indicate the inner part is only one degree above absolute zero. We are able to see the nebula because dust particles reflect light from the central star. In this image from the Hubble Space Telescope, the false colors indicate polarization angles of the reflected light. By analyzing how ...

But if stars are composed of electrically active plasma, many of the most perplexing mysteries may already be solved. Since the advent of modern stellar-evolution theory, astronomers have believed that old Sun-like stars blow off their upper layers in spherical shells as their cores collapse into white dwarfs. But the theory continually faces new challenges as we learn more about these “planetary nebulas”. Why, and how, has the old Sun-like star in the image above constrained its ejecta into bipolar tubes with one inside the other? Why are the walls of the tubes so sharply defined? Why are ...

An awareness of plasma behavior makes possible a more realistic view. The popular theories of star formation see in this image “thick and turbulent clouds of gas and dust” that are “being sculpted into pillars by radiation and winds from hot, massive stars.” “Radiation and winds from the massive stars subsequently blast the cloudy material outward, so that only the densest pillar-shaped clumps of material remain. The process is akin to the formation of desert mesas, which are made up of dense rock that resisted water and wind erosion.... [T he pillars eventually become dense enough to spur the birth of a second generation of stars.” The unreliable confidence that arises from having only one model with which ...

... picture ’ has changed. For decades we believed that gravity alone rules the macrocosm. Then an avalanche of space age discoveries revealed one of the great surprises of the twentieth century --a universe driven by electric currents and punctuated by cosmic violence". "From the smallest particle to the largest galactic formations, a web of circuitry connects and unifies all of nature, organizing galaxies, energizing stars, giving birth to planets and, on our world, controlling weather and animating biological organisms. There are no isolated islands in space". PLASMA DISCHARGE "It's easy to forget that, like bodies in space, ideas are connected. Every specialty in the theoretical sciences is susceptible to the "domino effect". When a foundational principle collapses, watch out. Nothing will remain the same". "Only a few decades ago astronomers discovered that plasma, distinguished by the presence of freely moving charged particles, fills the space between planets, stars, and galaxies. Today, the study of electric discharge in plasma is transforming our understanding of cosmic evolution". " ...

Human beings live on a planet where life thrives in every possible niche. Even at the frozen poles, life hangs on. We used to think that with too much or too little sunlight and without liquid water, life could not exist. Scientists developed the concept of a“ habitable zone” around the sun — a range of orbits in which a planet would receive the right amount of energy from the sun to allow photosynthesis ...

... direct answer to Mr Davis' question is that no cathode dark space has been encountered yet. However, there is a phenomenon which might be attributable to a cathode drop at the heliopause: Anomalous Cosmic Rays (ACRs). These are cosmic rays enriched in nitrogen, oxygen and helium- elements that will be predominantly neutral in interstellar space. It is now believed that these elements are ionized and accelerated by the shock at the heliopause. I am somewhat sceptical of explanations which rely on magnetic field compression at 'shock-fronts' in a plasma. Such theories, together with 'magnetic field reconnection' events, perpetuate the myth that magnetic fields can be frozen into a plasma and that a mathematical necessity of a purely magnetic/mechanical model must have physical meaning. In my opinion, following Ralph Juergens, the correct model must involve electric currents in space plasmas- then observed magnetic fields are diagnostic of underlying electrical activity. So it seems quite likely that ACRs are created and accelerated by the electric field in a cathode drop region at the heliopause. In my view, ...
