... another name for Saturn [17]. Here a confession is in order. When the ancients spoke of Saturn, they were not always alluding merely to the planet but to the visual configuration of which the planet was only one, even if the most conspicuous, part. Thus whilst as a deity Sin was truly Saturn, in a physical sense he was only an aspect - as Rawlinson so shrewdly deduced - of that configuration, namely its crescent, just as Sin's title of Udsar in fact informs us. The next item to clarify, therefore, is: what aspect of the Saturnian configuration could have presented itself to the earthly view as a crescent? Again much has ...
552. Towards a New Evolutionary Synthesis [Books]
... form of living things" [33: p. 108]. Hitching then went on to consider Lamarckism, catastrophism, self-organisation and evolution by macromutations, subjecting each to far less searching scrutiny than he had Darwinism. The concept of self-organisation developed from the open system and non-equilibrium thermodynamics of Nobel laureate Ilya Prigogine, Professor of Chemistry and Theoretical Physics at the Free University of Brussels and, although still lacking an experimental basis, could help to explain how complex biochemicals formed from simple molecules on the primordial Earth [12,15,33,69,70]. Furthermore, it has led to the theory of the co-evolution of biosphere and atmosphere, which is an interesting one ...
553. A LOOK AT THE FUTURE [Journals] [SIS Workshop]
... which reflects a certain dedramatising of the whole concept. It is now generally agreed that a nova is always a binary, or double star. The outburst takes place when material flows over from the gravitational field of the secondary to that of the primary, and this happens because the secondary is, in general terms "expanding". The physical mechanism behind this expansion is unknown. Novae below to a group of stars called cataclysmic variables, comprising ordinary (classical) novae, recurrent novae have done it several times, with periods of 10 - 80 years between outbursts. Dwarf novae could also be called recurrent - their outburst periods are very short, generally 10 - 100 days ...
554. Shifting Poles. Ch.8 Poles Displaced (Earth In Upheaval) [Velikovsky] [Velikovsky Earth in Upheaval]
... to the latitude of Edinburgh, or Edinburgh to the latitude of London. He must be a sanguine geologist indeed who can expect to account for the glaciation of this country, or for the former absence of ice around the poles, by this means. We know perfectly well that since the Glacial epoch there have been no changes in the physical geography of the earth sufficient to deflect the pole half a dozen miles, far less half a dozen degrees."3 J. Evans, a geologist, suggested that the astronomers reconsider their conclusion, on the supposition that the earth is a shell filled with molten matter. He envisaged the possibility that, under a change of load ...
555. Sceptics, Skeptics, Dissidents, Cranks and . . . [Journals] [SIS Workshop]
... , or is it a belief in Velikovsky that converts you to a belief in the Old Testament? There are too many dissidents' to take them all seriously. Every now and again a dissident is right, but only within their own areas of expertise. When someone comes along with ideas which will overturn history, archaeology, geology, physics and astronomy, I think it's fair to call him a crank, especially if his background is in psychoanalysis. Mike Hutchinson To: Mike Hutchinson, 3rd December 1993 I do not believe in either Velikovsky or the Old Testament. All I believe is that the Old Testament, like other very old books, can be a useful historical ...

557. Vox Popvli [Journals] [Aeon]
... my respect for, and interest in, religious traditions and their perspectives has been growing in different ways. I've also watched David Talbott's Remembering the End of the World video, the story of which I enjoyed and found thought-provoking (although it left many questions open, even some very basic ones). I'm in no position to judge the physical implications of the Saturn scenario. I have no knowledge about current astrophysical models or the history behind current astrophysical beliefs. But I do sympathize with the need (also taken by Velikovsky) to place comparative historical evidence above astrophysical theories. In my view, no matter how the Saturn project might turn out, or how convincing the evidence ...
558. The Ark Myth [Books]
... in a vessel, the reference to the earth-goddess in this case means that the warning was probably inferred from the tremors and earthquakes which began to happen at the same time as the deluge. Possibly also the myths which tell that animals warned deluge heroes of the impending catastrophe may belong here, for animals are said to be more sensitive to physical changes than human beings. Most of the myths telling of a warning, however, do not allow us to infer how the knowledge was obtained. As they do not contain any new or helpful points we shall not refer to any particular myth of that type here. The Ark Myth in the Book of Genesis tries to make out ...

... devil. To my way of thinking, these books of the Old Testament are of human origin; though inspired, they are not infallible and must be handled in a scientific manner as other literary documents of great antiquity. Yet I must admit that I had a share of satisfaction upon discovering that the so-called miracles of the Hebrew Bible were physical phenomena, and like the disturbance in the movement of the sun, being of a nature that made them visible to other peoples of great antiquity in different parts of the world, they are also found preserved in the ancient literature of other nations. Once again I was gratified when, in Ages in Chaos, upon synchronizing the histories ...
560. Obituary: Earl Milton [Journals] [SIS Review]
... health or circumstances kept Earl home. I always expected we would have the opportunity to talk for days about our similar views on the electric universe. I am deeply saddened by his passing. He was a man of great integrity and courage and a pioneer of the Electric Universe. Wal Thornhill Earl Richard Milton had degrees in Chemistry and Chemical Physics from University of Alberta and was awarded the Chant Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada in 1960. He taught from 1967 to 1990 at the University of Lethbridge, where his fields were Physics, Astronomy and Interdisciplinary Studies. He was a founding member of the SIS and also of the Canadian SIS. He worked with Ralph Juergens ...
