231. On The Lecture Circuit [Pensee]
... these facts, you can understand our enthusiasm.. ." *Excerpt from a letter to Dr. Velikovsky from the Langley Colloquium Committee vice1 chairman, inviting Dr. Velikovsky to participate in the Center's on-going lecture series, formed to stimulate communication between research staff and research community. Velikovsky's afternoon briefing and evening lecture drew larger-than-capacity crowds: the lecture was videotaped and shown two days later to those unable to get in. Focusing largely on a number of his "advance claims" which have yet to receive testing, Velikovsky remarked of Comet Kohoutek that the crucial issue is not the body's composition, but rather "what forces carry the comet around the sun"--electromagnetic forces playing a role, in his view. Velikovsky, when briefed on the Viking probes due to make a soft landing on Mars in 1976, urged that the probes should look for strong magnetic remanence; localized magnetic anomalies; microbiological life possibly pathogenic to man; strong, localized radioactivity causing thermal spots; and a steep thermal gradient. He also expects neon and argon to comprise part of the ...

232. Mystery Of The Missing Comets [Science Frontiers Website]
... Issue Contents Other pages Home Page Science Frontiers Online All Issues This Issue Sourcebook Project Sourcebook Subjects Mystery Of The Missing Comets A key feature of our solar system is the Oort Cloud of comets that surrounds the sun and its family of planets. No one has yet seen the Oort Cloud directly, but the textbooks say that it must be there. In fact, all stars like our sun with planetary systems should have their own private Oort Clouds of comets- if the prevailing theory of planetary-system formation is correct. When we see a comet looping around the sun, it is because it has been jostled loose from the Oort Cloud by a passing star or molecular cloud. Further, some of these jostled comets should be kicked outwards and thus escape the solar system. Continuing with this reasoning, we on earth should sometimes see interstellar comets that have been shaken loose from other stellar systems. But we don't! T.A. McGlynn and R.D. Chapman worry about this. "This lack of detections of extrasolar comets is becoming an embarrassment to the theories of solar system ...

233. Holocaust for Lucifer [SIS C&C Workshop $]
... Goethe, The Corinthian Bride. The underlying stimulus which led to the Holocaust- the gruesome sacrifice by fire of human beings- as well as to terror and the conflagrations of a World War (and leads to such things still, and will go on doing so) can only be sketched out here in a few simple phrases. But P.A.F is holding bibliographies and informational material available for all subject areas. The Natural History Background: From her "birth" from Jupiter until ca .-1480, Venus transits the solar system as a comet, on a stretched-out ellipse. Then she becomes entangled in the direct sphere of influence of the earth, which is ravaged by the physical forces and chemical effects of the cometary tail (Exodus catastrophe). Second encounter about -1430 (Joshua ben Nun), when "the sun stands still" or, in America, fails to rise. Ca. 500 years later, after a conflict with Mars, Venus, after an exchange of energy with Jupiter, takes up her present orbit. Mars threatens the earth four times ...

234. Phoebus Apollo - Aspect of Venus [SIS C&C Workshop $]
... we know about Dionysos must be true of Apollo. They were both sons of Zeus, and of Dionysos we are told that he was a horned child with serpent locks which makes him a manifestation of Venus. He was "twice born": on his first appearance he was torn apart and had to be reconstituted from "Jupiter's thigh". This could well be a description of the ejection of the proto-planet with some of the ejected material falling back into the parent body, followed by its final appearance as one whole "comet". The fact that Dionysos became the God of the Vine need not contradict his identification with Venus. It could be due to the reddening of the waters as in the Plague of Egypt, particularly if the manna or some of the gases accompanying the comet's visitation had an intoxicating effect. The connection with wine was probably reinforced by the memory of Venus's noisy transits accompanied by hissing, crackling meteorites which were thought to be the God's drunken revels with his train of Maenads "maddened" with wine. The animals which attended ...

236. Halley's Confounding Fireworks [Science Frontiers Website]
... Science Frontiers ONLINE No. 49: Jan-Feb 1987 Issue Contents Other pages Home Page Science Frontiers Online All Issues This Issue Sourcebook Project Sourcebook Subjects Halley's confounding fireworks "Serendipitous discovery in science so often comes as a surprise, even when it might reasonably be expected. Such was the case with Comet Halley in the wake of an observation program that dwarfed all preceding efforts. The surprises included sudden outbursts in the presumably steady vaporization of its icy nucleus and a periodic, complex pulsation of the comet's brightness. Whether this pulsation reflects the rotation of the nucleus, or some still unimagined phenomenon became a controversial focus of the recent meeting on the Exploration of Halley's Comet in Heidelberg." Some of the data presented and some of the attendees at this conference supported a rotational period of 2.2 days; others favored 7.4 days; a few liked a 2.2-day period with a 7.4-day wobble superimposed. ... as "Zimbabwe", the Bantu name being Zim-Mbye, meaning "Construction of Stone"- its original name Luvijiti having been cursed and forever forbidden after its destruction during the later folk-emigration southward. (This provides an answer to the riddle met by the archaeologists, who could not explain the "Phoenician" characteristics of the building.) Its ruins date from about 800 years before the present, after the appearance of the "Star of War" mentioned by Elizabeth Gaudry (SISR II:4, letters), a giant comet which caused famine, locusts and pestilence and brought about the great folk emigration to the south, remembered by Mutwa as the "Journey to Asazi" (asazi="we know not where"). From the sequence of events here retold, however, it becomes clear that these later events cannot be set in the time of the Exodus, but must have occurred long afterwards. (Although the name "Star of War" evokes the character of Mars, it was probably an early appearance of Halley's Comet.- ...

System Failure. Our prediction was: “Electrical stress may short out the electronics on board the impactor before impact.” The system did indeed fail a few seconds before impact, and data should be reviewed to look for indications of electrical breakdown. Multiple craters. We said, “If the energy is distributed over several flashes, more than one crater on the comet nucleus could result in addition to any impact crater”. Unfortunately, NASA did not anticipate the volume of dust removed by the explosion, which may have made it impossible for even the best enhancement technology to see though the ejecta. However, by tracing rays back to their source we noted the appearance of two ejecta centers immediately after the impact. Crater Size.
