101. Did Venus As A Protoplanet Ever Look Like A "Comet"? [SIS C&C Workshop $]
... From: SIS Workshop Vol 3 No 4 (Apr 1981) Home¦ Issue Contents Did Venus As A Protoplanet Ever Look Like A "Comet"? Chris Marx Velikovsky, in his WORLDS IN COLLISION and elsewhere, usually calls Venus a "comet", certainly from the time of her birth from Jupiter until the great catastrophe about -1450. At that time, presumably thousands of years after eruption from Jupiter, the peoples of the world saw two deities: the light-god, according to Velikovsky the "head" of the "comet" and the serpent, its "tail". But considering the evolution the protoplanet must have undergone since its eruption, the term "comet" does not seem appropriate. It is inconceivable, for example, that the body of the protoplanet would not have drawn surrounding matter closely around or onto itself; or lost other matter into space or, due also to its paramagnetic properties (at temperatures above Curie-point) to other bodies or electric fields. Thus the "errant star", to use a better term, ...

... Science Frontiers ONLINE No. 106: Jul-Aug 1996 Issue Contents Other pages Home Page Science Frontiers Online All Issues This Issue Sourcebook Project Sourcebook Subjects A SAGA OF SOOT: PART I The tale began on March 27, when Comet Hyakutake passed within 15 million kilometers of earth. At this point in its trajectory, it came into the field of view of the X-ray astronomy satellite ROSAT. ROSAT was designed to look at stars whose extremely high temperatures can generate X-rays. It seemed ridiculous to point ROSAT's instruments at a comet composed mainly of ice and dust. How could a comet emit X-rays? When a German-American team of scientists proposed taking a peek at Hyakutake with ROSAT, scientific eyebrowns were raised. What a waste of observing time! At the most, the team thought they might pick up a smudge of weak X-rays where dust grains flying off Hyakutake collided with dust grains normally present in interplanetary space. The team did get ROSAT to take a look, and what the satellite saw ignited a controversy. Some 50,000 kilometers in front of the comet ...
103. A Note on Rockenbach's De Cometis [Pensee]
... , pp. 81 ff.), Velikovsky argues for the identity of the pillar of fire, which led the Israelites, with Typhon of legend, the monster which battled Zeus. If this identification can be made, all the material on Typhon can be used in expanding our knowledge of the pillar of fire. Also of course, the two separate traditions, one mythical and one biblical, tend to confirm the argument that there is behind both a historical reality. A number of ancient authors clearly state that Typhon was a comet. Velikovsky's thesis demands more, however: Typhon must be dated to the time of the Exodus. If this can be done, there is impressive evidence that the pillar of fire was a comet or material from a comet. During his investigation of the works of chronographers, Velikovsky found a 1688 book, Cometographia, by Hevelius; he quoted earlier writers who had in turn quoted still earlier and lost manuscript books. From one of his sources, an author called Calvisius, Hevelius got the statement that the Exodus was in ...
104. ElROS AND CHARMION [Pensee]
... doing injury to our substantial globe, even in the event of contact. But contact was not in any degree dreaded; for the elements of all the comets were accurately known. That among them we should look for the agency of the threatened fiery destruction had been for many years considered an inadmissible idea. But wonders and wild fancies had been, of late days, strangely rife among mankind; and, although it was only with a few of the ignorant that actual apprehension prevailed, upon the announcement by astronomers of a new comet, yet this announcement was generally received with I know not what of agitation and mistrust. Halley's Comet over Paris (Fodestrum) Bettmann Archive The elements of the strange orb were immediately calculated, and it was at once conceded by all observers, that its path, at perihelion, would bring it into very close proximity with the earth. There were two or three astronomers, of secondary note, who resolutely maintained that a contact was inevitable. I cannot very well express to you the effect of this intelligence upon the people ...

... the Daily Telegraph 15/2/80 reported earth tremors affecting much of N.W. India which struck fear into superstitious millions who believe that a total solar eclipse expected on Saturday presages a series of disasters." The report described how "panic-stricken people ran out of their homes early yesterday" in response to the earth tremors, how the media have launched a campaign to educate the people about the eclipse, and how "millions of devout Hindus will bathe in the holy rivers to propitiate their gods." "DID A FLAMING COMET PART THE RED SEA?- Weekend 12-18/3/80 In the third of a series entitled "The Bible is Right", some miracles are given an explanation. The first of these was the burning bush, explained in terms of an idea of Dr. Harold Moldenke of New York's Botanical Gardens:- the bush was a remarkable 'gas plant'- whose oil glands give off a volatile gas, easily ignited if approached by a naked flame. The parting of the Red Sea is explained in terms of a ...

Nevertheless, a breed of Velikovsky disciples emerged, similar to alien-contact enthusiasts, and they proved to be the bane of astronomers, with occasional resurrections occurring even today." Astronomer Duncan Steel, Rogue Asteroids and the Doomsday Comet "The existence of a pervasive paradigm is one of the worst problems that faces science in all its manifestations. The concept of a paradigm shift is often exalted by the very people who do most to obviate such changes in doctrine, their conservatism being the barrier. For the majority of the time, dogma rules supreme." 109. GODS FIRE: CHAPTER ONE: PLAGUES AND COMETS [Quantavolution Website]
... agreement; contemporary egotism, we realize, fears and hates to believe that ancient times might have witnessed natural behavior of a scope and intensity not experienced today. In 1602, Abraham Rockenbach, a German Professor at Frankfurt University, published a "Treatise on Comets according to a New Method," there offering the following conclusion: In the year of the world two thousand four hundred and fifty-three (1495 B. C.)-- as many trustworthy authors, on the basis of many conjectures, have determined-- a comet appeared which Pliny also mentioned in his second book. It was fiery, of irregular circular form, with a wrapped head; it was in the shape of a globe and was of terrible aspect. It is said that King Typhon ruled at that time in Egypt. (This king, assert reliable men, subjugated the kings of Egypt with the help of the giants.) [5 Certain (authorities) assert that the comet was seen in Syria, Babylonia, India, in the sign of Capricorn, in the ...

... samples from the asteroid, it did produce high quality pictures of the asteroid ’ s surface that are now the subject of much debate among astronomers. As the electrical theorists see it, asteroids, comets, and meteors, are all born by being torn from a planetary surface in a cosmic plasma discharge or as the remains of rocky bodies that exploded under the extreme electrical stresses. The asteroid ’ s irregular shape is explicable because plasma discharges are known to create “dumbbell” or “potato” shaped forms from soils. The comet Halley is another well-known potato shaped body. But crucial distinctions must be made between comets and asteroids under the electrical interpretation of their origin — distinctions that are meaningless under conventional definitions of such bodies. The planetary soil and rock that is hurled into space will be modified by its degree of exposure to the plasma discharge. This is evident in the most abundant meteorites – the chondritic meteorites, so named for the melted spherules found within their dusty matrix. Some scientists have acknowledged that the best explanation for their origin is in a ...
