221. Addenda Et Corrigenda ... [Kronos $]
... On the Convection of Electric Charge by the Rotating Earth" (KRONOS, Vol. 2, No. 3, pp. 12-30) suggests that "waves of potential gradient" (Loeb) initiated by solar flares may transiently alter the electrical balance between the earth and the interplanetary plasma, imposing unusual electric-field strengths (increases or decreases) on the magnetospheric and atmospheric regions. According to Science News for June 18, 1977, R. Holzworth and F. Mozer reported just such an effect at a recent meeting of the American Geophysical Union. The two Berkeley physicists examined more than 50 hours of atmospheric electric-field data from balloon-borne instruments aloft during the solar flares of August 1972 and found that "the ambient electric field in the earth's atmosphere increased concurrently" with the arrival of flare-associated energetic particles (see abstract in EOS, Trans. Am. Geophys. U. 58, 402, June 1977). The increase amounted to about five to ten percent at sea level. Since an increase in negative charge on the earth, consistent with the suggested cause of ...

And a bit of organic matter was embedded in that first four-inch diameter sample of Greenland muck (top right image.) The organic matter might be a pine needle, a piece of bark, or possibly grass. The press release states that, "The presence of plant material under the ice indicates that the Greenland ice sheet formed relatively fast, as a slowly growing glacier would have flushed or pushed these light particles ...

... L. D. Kaplan showed, in a series of papers and JPL reports, that the clouds could not be of water and this for very decisive physical reasons. His evaluation of Mariner II results served NASA in its appraisal of the contents of the clouds. Also G. Kuiper was unable to detect water on Venus. "Venus' spectrum [is incompatible with the ice band.. ." (Kitt Peak National Observatory Contribution #24, 1963). In the November 1, 1966 issue of the Journal of Geophysical Research, W. Ho and I. A. Kaufman of Columbia University Radiation Laboratory and P. Thaddeus of NASA Goddard Institute of Space Studies discussed the visual infrared, and radio-frequency observations of Venus, and found: "An enormous mass of dust- many tens of grams per square centimeter column- would have to be suspended in the atmosphere to account for the microwave observations.. ." Also: "There is now abundant evidence that the centimetric radiation from Venus originates at the surface of the planet and is thermal ...

... pic of the day archive subject index abstract archive Links: Holoscience Electric Cosmos The Universe Plasma Cosmology Society for Interdisciplinary Studies educational resources Aeon Journal Sept 30, 2004 Discovering the Magnetosphere The discovery of the two Van Allen Radiation Belts could be called the first surprise of the space age. But scientists might not have been surprised had they paid attention to the experiments of plasma scientist Kristian Birkeland. In a basement lab of the physics department at the University of Iowa, James Van Allen designed Explorer 1, a scientific satellite for the International Geophysical Year (IGY) of 1957-1958. The satellite carried only a single instrument, a small Geiger counter to record energetic particles. The instrument was designed to measure cosmic rays, highly energetic ions (positively charged particles) of unknown origin arriving from distant space. Strangely, though the experiment detected many particles at low altitudes, at the top of the orbit it counted no particles at all, The explanation for this odd behavior was discovered two months later by Explorer 3. This new satellite included a tape to record data continuously ...

225. Tektites [Thunderbolts Website]
... , most specialists do not agree whether “Libyan Desert glass”, though enigmatic, should be classified as a “tektite”. Charles Darwin popularized the idea that tektites are volcanic, but this idea was later discredited. Some scientists have also suggested that large comets may have sprayed the earth with these odd stones. As the space age arrived, attention shifted to the moon. In the 1960s, Dean Chapman and Howard Larson prepared a number of scientific papers on tektites, suggesting a lunar source. In 1963 the Journal of Geophysical Research published their paper "On the Lunar Origin of Tektites”. Chapman believed that, as large meteors struck the lunar surface, some of the material excavated by the impact escaped to space. He observed that some tektites, most notably those from Australia, show signs of “aerodynamic ablation”, a sculpting by passage through the Earth s atmosphere at extremely high speeds, he believed. The picture above (top) shows three views of a specimen created experimentally by Chapman in Ames Research Center s arc-jet facility ...

... whirlwinds on Mars, some NASA scientists began taking electrical measurements around dust devils on Earth. They found large electrical fields with strengths 40 times that of the fair weather field. They assumed that the mechanical spinning of dusty air rubbed electrons off the dust grains and then somehow pulled the electrons to one end of the devil and the positive grains to the other. Are the mechanical forces in a whirlwind strong enough to overcome the strength of an electrical force in a field of thousands of volts per meter? A report in the Geophysical Review Letters of 17 November 2003 by Joseph Dwyer of the Florida Institute of Technology calculates that mechanical forces in a thundercloud are far too weak to generate the electric fields that produce lightning. See the commentary on this question at: http://www.holoscience.com/news.php?article=9eq6g3aj If the winds of a thunderstorm can t separate charges, then the trivial breezes of a whirlwind certainly can t! ... serious problems and are not known to be accurate, much less proven beyond dispute. One must contrast this with the self-assured and groundless insistence that a determination of some miniscule quantity of water vapor in the Venusian atmosphere "proves" that the Icarus articles by Sagan and Pollack(1-4) are precise predictions of a "verified" greenhouse effect on Venus.(5) Anyone who actually wishes to read the Icarus articles should procure the work edited by Jill Williams, and also keep by his side a copy of the Handbook of Geophysics and Space Environments, edited by Shea L. Valley (Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories, McGraw-Hill). Some perspective will then be maintained. The problem we have with Venus is not strictly mathematical. One could easily "assume" a collection of radiation absorption coefficients, interspersed with sophisticated remarks about "generous assumptions", and by choosing the coefficients to suit the desired answer, "prove" that no radiant energy arrives at Venus' surface from the Sun. The computational methods will work accurately only if the absorption characteristics ...

... conclude that they must have been waders to offset their great weight. Whatever happened to the dinosaurs was far more than a puny asteroid impact could inflict. Nothing was the same on Earth after a global alteration of Earth s gravity. The triumph of the impact model was not so much because of its adequacy in explaining the evidence as it was a default result: Only impact and volcanic explanations were considered, and the spherules and shocked quartz clearly ruled out volcanism. "We know so little about impacts," says theoretical geophysicist Jay Melosh of the University of Arizona. But an electrical mechanism was never considered because astronomers assure geologists that the planets have always been on their present orbits and in space electrical events never happen. ... high surface temperature of Venus, he was correct in stating that the Sun dominates internal sources. Despite the fact that Velikovsky over-anticipated the internal contribution, it should be emphasized that conventional thinking has no means either to predict or to explain any thermal imbalance greater than Earth's (which derives primarily from radioactive decay and is minuscule), whereas Velikovsky had the correct qualitative expectation. POSTSCRIPT 1981: Taylor's results are reported in "The Thermal Balance of Venus in Light of the Pioneer Venus Mission" by Tomasko et al. [Journal of Geophysical Research, Vol.85, No. A13, pp. 8187-8199, December 30, 1980. Most inexplicably, the New Scientist article bears only superficial resemblance to the results in the technical paper (completed last May) from which their report originated. The most significant discrepancy is that the technical paper gives no credence to the reality of a thermal imbalance on Venus whereas New Scientist, with scant qualification, leaves the impression that the imbalance is probably real, albeit disbelieved. According to Taylor, responding to an unofficial inquiry by a ...
