... explicitly points to a planetary cause for the catastrophe. Velikovsky's contention would not even merit serious consideration were it not for the fact that legend persists in linking Abram's early life with certain irregularities of the planet Jupiter. Velikovsky was of the opinion that the thunderbolt which was said to have destroyed the Cities came from Jupiter. Concerning this incident, Tacitus wrote: "I am ready to allow, on the one hand, that cities, once famous, may have been consumed by fire from heaven..."(267) Thunderbolts are awesome phenomena. Ancient man, like his modern counterpart, would have had many an experience with thunderstorms. He would have witnessed lightning striking trees, perhaps causing forest fires, and other mishaps. It would not have been unusual, as it is not now, to have thunderbolts demolish buildings.- But entire cities? One can understand why the North American Indians of the eastern woodlands deified thunder and anthropomorphized the phenomenon as Heng, the big vigorous youngster of the thunderbolt.(268) But in the mythologies of ...

... From: SIS Chronology& Catastrophism Review 2001:2 (Jan 2002) Home¦ Issue Contents Report Letopolis: city of the thunderbolt Phillip Clapham Velikovsky expressed an interest in the ancient Egyptian cult centre of Letopolis. This was due, I assume, to its connection with thunderbolts- and its sacred animal, the shrewmouse. The early-mid 20 th century Egyptologist, W.E. Wainwright, is still regarded as an authority on Letopolis (see Journal of Egyptian Archaeology XVIII:1932, p. 164 for an article on Letopolis that is quoted by Velikovsky in Worlds in Collision and by Bauval in The Orion Mystery). Velikovsky was eager to make a connection between mice and the 'blast from heaven' that smote the camp of the Assyrian army of Sennacherib (in either 701 or 687BC). Herodotus provides a typically garbled account of the event, claiming mice had gnawed at the bowstrings of the Assyrians during the night, causing them to withdraw and return home. Herodotus may have misinterpreted his source. He does not seem to have understood the symbolic link at ...

6. The Sulfur Connection [Kronos $]
... From: Kronos Vol. XII No. 3 (Spring 1988) Home¦ Issue Contents The Sulfur Connection Dwardu Cardona In analyzing the possible cause behind the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah some years back, I discussed those ancient sources which persisted in connecting the odor of sulfur with thunderbolts(1) Why thunderbolts were at all considered as possible agents of this destruction was made clear even earlier.(2) At that time I excluded all observations from modern times that might have been germane to the analysis because, to tell the truth, I was only aware of one that of Benjamin Franklin's 1749 report to the Royal Society in London. In that report, Franklin listed sulfurous odors as being common to both electrical and lightning discharges. Bob Forrest has since supplied me with another modern case,(3)- that of a shop which, in 1872, was struck by lightning. "The shop was filled with a sulphurous smell long after the occurrence."(4) This led me to conduct additional research of my own. What came ...

If the ancient thunderbolt legends are taken at face value, then we are faced with the possibility that our neighboring planets waged celestial wars with thunderbolts in the time of human myth-makers. If this happened, what "smoking guns" should we expect to find? Jupiter's moon, Europa, offers an excellent example. The images above show a plasma ball as an electric discharge flows across it (top) and a view of Europa's scarred surface (bottom). Europa's rotation has been captured by Jupiter, so the ...

... home picture of the day archive subject index the film (video clips) educational materials Aeon Journal Contact us Thunderbolts of the Gods Monograph+ DVD Thunderbolts of the Gods by David Talbott and Wallace Thornhill, is the first in a series of volumes contending that planetary instability and large scale electrical phenomena in ancient times led to a series of global catastrophes remembered around the world. Talbott and Thornhill claim that earthshaking upheaval occurred so recently as to have profoundly affected early human cultures. And the two authors suggest that the myths and religions of all ancient peoples memorialized these events. To make their case, they offer a new synthesis of ancient testimony, high-energy plasma laboratory experiments, and space age discoveries. Monograph/DVD information: Thunderbolts of the Gods is a 108 page full color monograph based on the life work of the two authors-a revolutionary synthesis of comparative mythology and the newly-discovered "Electric Universe." Davidson's opinion may be cited as representing the orthodox position: "To people of an earlier civilization, living in vulnerable houses of wood or in tents and caves, such a sight as this [a major thunderstorm must have been terrifying indeed. It is not surprising then that thunder is visualized, in lands where storms are frequent, as the manifestation of divine power, and symbolized accordingly throughout the world." The thundergod himself, according to this view, is an invisible Oz-like being acting behind the scenes to bring about the thunderstorm ...

... seriously, they raise many questions. Why did ancient man worship the god Saturn? The planet Saturn is very difficult for the average person to even find in the sky today. Some mythologists postulate that there is evidence in ancient lore to connect the scarred warrior hero of legend with the god Mars. Yet the planet we know as Mars is only a tiny speck in the sky today; and its deep, 2,400 mile-long canyon (scar), Valles Marineris, cannot be seen from Earth without a powerful telescope. Thunderbolts Between Planets: The myths of many of the ancients tell of violent thunderbolt interaction between the gods. Of course we see lightning on earth today, but never "thunderbolts" that streak between planets. What could have caused these violent interactions long ago? The Ancient Record: Why do pictographs show what is commonly considered to be the sun as a huge disc with a smaller one in the center, often with rays flowing out of it, with a third darker circle superimposed in the center? Our sun looks nothing like ...
