... in the last few years. As a direct result of the Comet SL9 impact, an almost endless stream of conference proceedings, research papers and new books on Near Earth Objects' ( 'NEOs') and the impact hazard has been published. One of the most noticeable changes from the 1980s (which focused primarily on dinosaurs and mass extinctions in geological time), is the growing interest in and risk assessment of the cosmic threat to civilisation. Moreover, a number of archaeologists, climatologists and planetary geologists have begun to search for possible impact events during the mankind's historical and prehistoric periods. This new recognition of historical catastrophism is the result not only of SL9 crashing on Jupiter ...

356. Cosmic Catastrophism And Palaeomagnetism [Books]
... `Theory of Convection Currents' is a modified version of Wegener's theory of Continental Drift. It is supposed that ascending warm currents inside the mantle create the volcanic oceanic ridges where these currents give rise to chains of active volcanoes. The horizontal currents (away from the oceanic ridges) drag along with them the volcanic islands (the volcanoes becoming extinct) and push the continents apart. When the horizontal currents have cooled off, they sweep downwards, creating mountain ridges in the region where they descend. It is believed that the drift caused by the horizontal branch of the convection currents has a mean value of 3.5 cm. per year.22 The weak point of the ...

... within the Arctic Circle, on the same latitude as northern Greenland and are at present wastes of permafrost, with the only vegetation ground-hugging and dormant during the four months of winter darkness. Thick layers of sands, silts and coals, said to be from the early part of the Tertiary Period (i .e ., immediately following the extinction of the dinosaurs) have long been known from here and finds of fossil wood and stumps are not uncommon. The commonest types of trees which have fossilised associated with the coal seams are the dawn redwood and the swamp cypress (now only found in China), and these are taken to indicate that lowland swamps were common in the ...

359. Predicting The Past [Journals] [SIS Internet Digest]
... history? Most scholars during the past century-and-a-half gave regarded these questions as settled once and for all. Ever sine Darwin, the great majority of historians, anthropologists, and geologists have assumed that the doctrine of gradual evolution was proven beyond need for further discussion. Today, the tide has turned somewhat. Now school children are taught that the extinction of the dinosaurs was due to the crashing to Earth of a comet or an asteroid sixty million years ago. Astronomers have written books about how asteroid and comet impacts destroyed past civilizations and threaten our present one. Experts in the field of dendrochronology have concluded that tree-ring data show steep environmental downturns within historical times, and that these events ...

... be traced to the rare occasions when increased cosmic radiation levels (emanating from nearby supernovae or major solar flares) coincide with the "window" offered by the Earth's magnetic field when at zero strength prior to regeneration with reversed polarity - a brief but important contribution. A continuing exchange on radioactivity in fossil bones, with particular reference to the extinction of the dinosaurs, provides useful material by various geologists (some of whom unfortunately exhibit stereotyped and conditioned thinking); and this is supplemented by an assorted list of further literature by the editor. Supplying a more interdisciplinary(?) dimension, P. PASSERINI (U . of Florence), in "Knowledge and Entropy - an ...
