891. Velikovsky -- what has survived? [Journals] [SIS Internet Digest]
... work- if any- he still believes to be valid, or of value. It would be interesting to know how each member of Kronia would respond to that question. Personally... I believe Velikovsky's main contribution was the revival of catastrophism in the 20th century. He will be remembered for using psychiatric methods to interpret myth and religion as repressed memory of catastrophes past, paving the way for additional insights by others. I don't think his Venus and Mars scenarios will be upheld, but I do think his research will be credited with bringing about an eventual acceptance that there were global catastrophes of celestial origin in the Bronze Age. In chronology, his Bible-based revision will ...

(5 ) The finest catalogue published on these marvelous pieces of minor art, that of Opificius, appeared three decades later and included 726 different shapes or designs, of which one or several castings were dug up in Mesopotamia and Iran. (6 ) Quite a few of them provided significant information on religious ideas. Two especially famous ones are reproduced below. Terra-cotta relief from Khafadji showing a celestial combat. 12cm high. 893. Conference: Inspiration of Astronomical Phenomena [Journals] [SIS Internet Digest]
... and the stars for granted. The participants in INSAP II will try to undo that, as well as to look for the powerful and unique effects that astronomical phenomena have had on human thought and culture through the ages. Although the meeting will have emphases in the general areas of art, history and politics, literature, and myth and religion, presentations are invited in a broad range of studies concerning human reactions to astronomical phenomena. Also, there will be several excursions and visits to sites of special interest on the islands of the Maltese Archipelago. The conference will be limited to about 120 attendees. Although most of the attendees will be expected to present their original research in ...

... world's leading authorities on ancient mythology' and promises a truly ground-breaking book', For the first time ever we can get inside Plato's mind .. .', The result is nothing short of a sensation. In this book I present not only a complete decoding of the lost continent of Atlantis, but also a decoding of ancient Greek religion in its entirety'. The book is even described as a kind of initiation process' where the reader is advised to digest one chapter at a sitting and take time for reflection' before moving on. Serious stuff, indeed .. . Alford's general approach to Greek myth is now along plausible and promising lines: The myths of ...

... uninhibited thinker. I had heard many of his ideas second-hand and wanted to hear them without the usual colouring of others. I was impressed with his attention to mathematical and physical detail but appalled at his abysmal ignorance of geology and his avowed intent to discredit observations of geology. His was a stimulating presentation.... I had anticipated religious overtones in his paper but there were none, fortunately, even though the person inviting him down is a professed short history' chemist. Effects of his paper difficult to evaluate, for those who are in agreement with him are more deeply convinced his thinking is correct and those who were opposed are still opposed, only more intently. ...

... unclean persons from Egypt. They settled on the site of the abandoned Hyksos capital of Avaris and chose as their leader a certain priest named Osarsiph. Soon they were joined by a host of foreigners with whose assistance they invaded Egypt, expelled King Amenophis, and sorely oppressed the population. They ruled in utter disregard of the country's civil and religious laws, "pillaged the temples and mutilated the images of the gods". The historical period in which these events should be placed is clearly indicated by the prominence given to "Amenophis, son of Paapis, whose wisdom and knowledge of the future were regarded as marks of divinity". This can refer to no one except Amenhotep ...

Rupert Sheldrake's A New Science of Life - The Hypothesis of Formative Causation (Blond and Briggs, £12.50) was published last June and was treated with refreshing open-mindedness by New Scientist (18/6 /81). It has since stirred considerable interest in religious and non-orthodox fields (e .g . The Tablet 1/8 /81, The Unexplained pp. 1141-45) and, naturally, a derisive response from the orthodox (e .g . New Scientist letters 2/7 /81). Sheldrake postulates that the development of an organism from egg or seed and its subsequent function ...
