How You Can Help This Magazine

The articles

CATASTROPHISM AND UNIFORMITARIANISM by Alistair F.Pitty has been taken over, with the publisher's permission, from the textbook 'Geomorphology' (1971, Methuen & Co.Ltd., London). Copyright A.F. Pitty. The writer argues that "there is growing appreciation of a non-uniform if not catastrophic element in the rates of both endogenetic and exogenetic changes".

HORIZONTAL LANDSLIDES DURING THE 1960 CHILE EARTHQUAKE by Haroun Tazieff is a recapitulation of data published soon after the earthquake in several articles written in French. Those data demonstrate "the importance of earthquakes as an agency in geomorphology, sedimentology and tectonics".

MASS MOVEMENTS IN LEVEL AREAS by Doeko Goosen is adapted from "A new model for level areas", the author's inaugural address delivered on the occasion of his public acceptance of the chair of soil survey at the International Institute for Aerial Survey and Earth Sciences (ITC), Enschedé, the Netherlands, on 17 December 1974. The writer presents data showing that the features of many level areas can only be explained by large-scale mass movements in the past.

OVERNIGHT VALLEY FORMATION IN SAO NICOLAU by Johan B.Kloosterman is a news item based on newspaper clippings. A 500-meter valley was formed in less than two minutes.

THE YUTY CRATER ON MARS by V.Axel Firsoff is extended from a letter written to Viking Mission Operations at Pasadena, California. The writer argues that the impact hypothesis of planetary cratering is being used as a "dogma, and facts (are) being doctored to fit it".

THE MARTIAN DELUGE by Johan B.Kloosterman is a commentary on the Viking discoveries, on Remote Sensing and on science reporting.
