13. Interviewing Immanuel Velikovsky: An Introduction [The Velikovskian $]
... From: The Velikovskian Vol 2 No 2 (1994) Home¦ Issue Contents Interviewing Immanuel Velikovsky: An Introduction Robert Nichol Early in 1973, I was invited to participate in a film which was to be an educational program on Immanuel Velikovsky, directed by Bill Mason, a distinguished National Film Board of Canada (NFBC) filmmaker. (He had won many awards including two Academy Award nominations.) Bill was receiving much internal criticism over the project and was asked for my support. Mason had already shot Velikovsky's lecture at Harvard (1972?). This filming had to overcome much opposition from both outside and inside the NFB to be achieved. I garnered support within the NFB because of my solid reputation as a filmmaker and on the strength of a fair hearing for the man. I got deeply involved in the Velikovsky thesis and ended up filming the A. A. A. S. conference "Velikovsky's Challenge to Science" in San Francisco in 1974, which included an interview with Carl Sagan and Ivan King --the symposium moderator. By now ...
14. Velikovsky and His Heroes [SIS C&C Review $]
... From: SIS Review Vol V No 4 (1984) Home¦ Issue Contents Velikovsky and His Heroes Martin Sieff (c) Martin Sieff 1984 Martin Sieff has an Honours B.A. in history from Oxford University. After postgraduate study at London University in the history of 20th-century Palestine he has worked as a journalist in Britain and Israel. He has been a Contributing Editor of Kronos, and Editorial Associate of the S.I.S. Review to which he has contributed several historical studies. Martin Sieff's highly original- and often provocative- analysis of Velikovsky's writings demonstrates the error of those critics who seek to label Velikovsky as a biblical fundamentalist. A close examination of the literary and psychological clues in his writings shows that the personal motivations which may have helped shape his work were actually far from being religious. The great religious leaders of the Old Testament, such as Moses and Elijah hardly figure at all in Ages in Chaos and Worlds in Collision Instead, pride of place is given to three other figures, Isaiah, Ahab and Saul, the last two being notorious " ...
... Lynn E. Rose, Jan Sammer, and Clark Whelton are especially appreciated. Science today, as religion in the past, has become dogmatic-- in the East as in the West A scientist must swear loyalty to the established dogmas. The first rule of the scientific attitude is to study, then to think, and then to express an opinion. A reverse of this is not a scientific approach, and this is exactly what has been done by a group of scientists who have expressed opinions about my work. Immanuel Velikovsky, quoted in Harvey Breit, "Talk with Mr. Velikovsky", The New York Times Review of Books, April 2, 1950, p.12. It seems most ironic that the scientific method that Descartes, Bacon, and friends presented to release humanity from the tyranny of organized religion now threatens to become further dogma. Brian Van der Horst, "Science and Scientism", New Age September, 1979, p.20. Whereas science is positive, contenting itself with reporting what it discovers, scientism is negative. It goes ...

18. For the Benefit of the Press [Pensee]
... From: Pensée Vol. 4 No 2: (Spring 1974) "Immanuel Velikovsky Reconsidered VII" Home¦ Issue Contents For the Benefit of the Press News reports of the San Francisco symposium constitute a fascinating study in their own right. Analysis of these accounts shows a number of misrepresentations occurring repeatedly, and often in strikingly similar phrases. We have selected the following brief excerpts from Newsweek (February 25, 1974), Los Angeles Times, Oakland Tribune, New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco Examiner (all dated February 26), Philadelphia Inquirer (February 27), Science News (March 2), The Chronicle of Higher Education (March 4), New Scientist (March 7), New York Sunday News (March 10), Science (March 15), and London Observer (March 21). 1) Velikovsky is an obstinate defender of his ideas and sustains himself by sheer ego.--"He is looking forward to what he doggedly insists will be his ultimate vindication. 'I have been proven correct ...
19. Velikovsky's Dreamwork [Aeon Journal $]
... From: Aeon III:2 (May 1993) Home¦ Issue Contents Velikovsky's Dreamwork Duane Leroy Vorhees See note* below. A physician by training, Velikovsky was the first practicing psychoanalyst in Palestine. He was one of the first, in a specifically psychoanalytic context, to trace some of the ideas in Freud's Interpretation of Dreams back to Jewish notions that predated Freud by many centuries. The article was published in 1933 by the Internationaler Psychoanalytischer Verlag, a publishing house founded under Freud's aegis to promote "true" psychoanalytic doctrines. Like the Bible itself, the Talmud commentary upon the Bible is composed of many books written over a long span of years. One of these "books" is the Mishna, which is divided into six sedarim (orders); each sedar is further divided into messekhtoth (tractates). The first tractate is Berakoth, which deals with prayers and benedictions and similar liturgical matters, including an extensive treatment of dreams. In the Berakoth Velikovsky saw a clear foreshadowing of Freudian paradigms: the dream as wish fulfillment, puns in ...
20. The Jewish Science of Immanuel Velikovsky: Part One [Aeon Journal $]
... From: Aeon II:6 (1991) Home¦ Issue Contents The Jewish Science of Immanuel Velikovsky: Part One (1) Duane Vorhees This essay is not primarily intended to attempt any extended defense, or critique, of the correctness or utility of the theories or methodologies of Immanuel Velikovsky, although Part One of this work is a rather detailed summary of his approach. Rather, based on the nature and scope of his challenge to the paradigmatic assumptions of his age, I propose to present him as a useful case study of how certain personal and environmental factors (culture, tradition, family, occupation, avocation) may have helped influence the development of one particularly creative though iconoclastic ideational structure, and how those factors tended to predispose the nature of that structure's content. Undoubtedly, there are other factors to be considered: the mechanics of mid-life crisis, for example, but these will not be examined here in any depth. For there is no pretense here of proposing a general theory to explain the phenomenon of idea-formation itself; no single case ...
