... were traditionally loyal Elohists. Few could have been Yahwist, inasmuch as Moses was only then expounding the new cult. In what would have been Goshen, at Tell ed-Dab'a, a town of the Middle Bronze Age has recently been excavated. It reveals a heavy non-Egyptian, Palestinian aspect. Skeletal remains, etymology, and artifacts disclose a heterogeneous population of Semitic and other backgrounds [1. This would support our theory that the proto-Israelites were a geographically separate and autonomous people, to some degree maintaining their old ethnic identity, living among Egyptians and other peoples from East and West, intermarrying, holding a full range of occupations, but now caught up in a xenophobic, anti-semitic period and forced to supply corvées and employ birth-control. It is not surprising to learn that the Book of Exodus, as befits a historical work of those times, has much in it of the popular Egyptian language [2. The some three million souls that the Bible asserts left Egypt are far too many. It is not that aggregated tribes of 500,000 or even more have ...

... of the gods. In 1983 a McMaster-Bauer Symposium [2 on consciousness took place in which it was decided that the lecture should be given by Julian Jaynes. During the open discussion period the following question was asked from the 'floor': 'How about the pyramids of Egypt? Surely the pharaohs who built them as their tombs were thinking ahead to their afterlife, and that would be consciousness.' Jaynes replied as follows: "This is what is called the "presentist" fallacy. You are phrasing the situation as if ancient Egyptians were like ourselves. They were not. The pharaohs of 2500 B.C. did not built the pyramids for themselves. You must remember that the volition of a bicameral person was his auditory hallucination or god, and so the volition of each pharaoh was Osiris, the chief god, who was his "ka" or bicameral voice. Osiris commands the building of the pyramids to his glory in the same way that a millennium later Yahweh with great architectural detail commands Moses to build an ark and a tabernacle to his glory ( ...

... is Thutmose III. In the newly proposed chronological scheme Thutmose III is put in the time of the Judges around 1200 BC. Thutmose was well known from his annals to have attacked the Holy Land about fifteen times. This certainly is not reflected in the Bible at the time of Judges. 3. The third and most significant reason is the Amarna Age, which is dated by Rohl and James to around 1050 BC and the time of Saul and David. The Bible has many stories dealing with these kings- in which the Egyptians are hardly mentioned. Further, there are figures in the Amarna Letters that do seem to appear in the Bible around the time of Jehoshaphat, like Iahzibada and Zuchru. Are the habiru really the Hebrews under Saul and David? The habiru appear to be further north, not even in the Holy Land, If Samuru is on the Levantine coast and not at Samarias then the habiru are affecting areas north of Sidon and appear to be out of the area of activities of Saul and David. Nevertheless, we all must keep ...

... by alkaline ash fallout did indeed follow the volcanic explosion. How did such a succession of natural events occur? Were there really 10 events, as there were Ten Commandments? How could such natural events occur within such an unnaturally short period of time- and if the events were supposed to be 'natural', why were not the more common natural disasters, such as a high Nile flood, destruction of buildings by fire, earthquakes, or even a plague of a killer disease, brought down upon the heads of the offending Egyptians? My hidden agenda for this meeting was therefore to try to find out the extent of the beliefs of those attending, including whether or not they believed in the literal truth of the Biblical narrative. I had armed with myself with an overhead projector together with slides for each of the events, listing the main parameters concerning each one. This included: the Biblical description of what happened, the extent of the impact of the plague, time from threat to onset, duration from start to finish, how the event was ...

... of nature. 'Cognitio' is used of perception and finding out. The Greek 'prepo' means to appear clearly to the senses. Zeus 'prepei', appears, in the aither (Euripides, Helena: 216). This is the original sense of the word, but it usually means 'to be fitting'. Vergil mentions "radii aurati," golden rays, round the head of a statue (Aeneid XII: 163). 'Radiare' is to shine. Plato's theory of vision is hardly different from that of the Egyptians. Sunlight is a manifestation of the god Ra, and the utchat is a hieroglyph comprising a picture of an eye and the radiation symbol. In The Book of the Dead there is a reference to gods with eyes as sharp as knives. Greek 'kanthos' is the corner of the eye; Greek anthos= flower. I suggest ka and anthos for kanthos. The utchat itself suggests the curve of the snake's or lizard's tongue, possibly the augur's lituus, and the Egyptian style of beard, chabes, flame of ka ...

... Science Frontiers ONLINE No. 123: May-Jun 1999 Issue Contents Other pages Home Page Science Frontiers Online All Issues This Issue Sourcebook Project Sourcebook Subjects Sophisticated Chemistry In Ancient Egypt The ancient Egyptians applied cosmetics copiously to themselves. Upper-class women (perhaps men, too) favored green, white, and black makeup. These cosmetic powders, dating from 2,000 B.C., have been exceptionally well preserved in their original vials made of alabaster, ceramic, and wood. A team of French chemists led by P. Walter was not surprised when their analyses of these powders found crushed galena and cerussite (two ores of lead). However, they nearly dropped their test tubes when they also found chemical compounds that are extremely rare in nature; specifically, laurionite (PbOHCl) and phosgenite (Pb 2 Cl 2 CO 3). In fact, these compounds are so rare naturally that the Egyptian powders must be artificial. P. Walter et al wrote: "Taken together, these results indicate that laurionite and phosgenite must have been synthesized in Ancient Egypt using ...

117. A FIRE NOT BLOWN: INTRODUCTION [Quantavolution Website]
... men, who see them alive in the sky and in the earth and reacting simultaneously in both places on quantavolutionary occasions. The vocabulary invested with the phenomenon of fire is demonstrably capable of distinguishing electrical from other fires, within individual languages and with trans-linguistic similarities. The object of priestly study was theological electricity. Lightning, magnetism and piezoelectric effects were related in the ancient mind as divine fire. Although Crete was a land of many peoples and dialects, it followed a consistent pattern of ritual settings, and these were akin to the Egyptians. Significantly, high places were known to attract electrical discharges, but on lowlands and on hills wells could be dug and filled with stones that may have come from more electrified sacral ground and been expected to enhance local electrical effects. Lanuguage correlations include proper names, and here it is shown, inter alia, that two kings of Crete are named Minos, one of the Old Bronze Age and one of the Iron Age, and likewise there is an ingenious Daedalus in Minoan times and the same much later as pioneer sculptor ...

... and von Dechend themselves saw fit to inform us, Langdon did not really pay any "heed to such notion''.(15) The god's epithet, "the prevalent, the strong", means nothing. Such epithets were bestowed not only on Mercury Jupiter. and Procyon but on almost every other god and planet in the mythologies of all nations. That "seb [as per Robert Temple... also means 'the planet Mercury' ", is something of a liberty. Devoid of vowels. which the Egyptians did not employ, the name of the planet Mercury is actually designated "Sbg(w)".(16) Through the insertion of vowels. E. A. Wallis Budge rendered this name as Sebku and/or Sebek.(17) Treating "Sebek" as being the same as "Seb" would be akin to treating the English word "cater" as being the same as "cat". Now it is true that Budge also speaks of the god Sebek as being affiliated with the god Seb ...

... hand of the angel before God. "Then the angel took the censer and filled it with fire from the altar and threw it on the earth; and there were peals of thunder, loud noises, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake."(2) Before analysing this passage, let us make an enquiry concerning the Hebraic institution of offering "incense" upon the "golden altar": "The offering of incense, or burning of aromatic substances, is common in the religious ceremonies of nearly all nations (Egyptians, Babylonians, Assyrians, Phoenicians, etc.), and it is natural to find it holding a prominent place in the tabernacle and temple-worship of Israel. The newer critical theory that incense was a late importation into the religion of Israel, and that the altar of incense described in Exodus 30:1 ff. is a post-exilian invention, rests on presuppositions which are not here admitted, and is in contradiction to the express notices of the altar of incense in I Kings 6:20, 22; 7:48 ...

... lamp-black, (c) crushing something entirely burnt such as small pieces of wood or bones. An addition of white to black produced a serviceable grey and also white must have been supplied as a useful 'lightener-upper' for other colours. The splendid tomb of Rekhmire has hundreds of small figures painted on the walls representing workers, entertainers, visitors and members of the family all engaged in their activities and all are dressed in white garments. However, all this white must have been obtained from a more productive source. Note: Ancient Egyptians are said to have discovered the dazzling' White Lead'. Blue or greenish blue was a somewhat complicated colour to make and its ingredients were very precious on the newly discovered site but one small lump was found. Egyptologists have always said 'blue was made from ground-up 'Lapis lazuli'. This is a most incorrect statement. A few small pieces have been found in the Royal tombs of Pharaohs as polished oddments of jewellery and burial items made from the precious gemstone found in Afghanistan but the method of manufacture of 'Egyptian Blue' ...
