... From: Aeon V:4 (July 1999) Home¦ Issue Contents Comets, Polular Culture, and the Birth of Modern Cosmology by Sara Genuth (Princeton, 1997) Reviewed by Ev Cochrane Few things in life are as memorable and charged with unconscious emotion as the appearance of a brilliant comet. From time immemorial, comets have inspired dread and been associated with ominous portents. Ancient Babylonian astronomical texts link comets to the death of kings and other calamities. Similar views were common among the Greeks and Romans. Of a comet that appeared during Nero's reign, Tacitus wrote as follows: "A comet blazed into view-- in the opinion of the crowd, an apparition boding change to monarchies. Hence, as though Nero were already dethroned, men began to inquire on whom the next choice should fall." [8 In order to assuage the panicked populace and preserve his power, Nero had his potential rivals slain in an orgy of blood and deceit. That such beliefs persisted well into modern times is confirmed by Shakespeare's famous passage: " ...

Between January 15 th and 19 th four powerful solar flares erupted from “sunspot 720”, shown in the picture above. Then on January 20 the fifth explosion produced a coronal mass ejection (CME) that achieved velocities incomparably greater than anything astronomers had seen before. While it often takes more than 24 hours for the charged particles of a solar outburst to reach the Earth, this one was a profound exception. Just thirty minutes after the explosion, Earth (some 96 million miles from the Sun) was immersed in what NASA scientists called “the most intense proton storm in decades”. Proton storms get their name ...

... Issue Contents Society for Interdisciplinary Studies a registered charity (Charities Act, 1960)- registration number 286264. About Chronology& Catastrophism Review The SIS was founded in 1974 in response to a growing interest in the works of modern catastrophists, notably the highly controversial Dr Immanuel Velikovsky. In his books Worlds in Collision, Earth in Upheaval and Ages in Chaos he argued that the ancient myths and sources such as the Bible contained records of planetary catastrophes in the Earth s history and, based on this, he suggested that geology, cosmology and ancient history should be reconsidered. In cosmology he proposed that electricity played a much larger role than in the orthodox scheme and that Venus in particular was a young planet. In ancient history, he proposed that the orthodox chronology should be severely shortened to eliminate false identifications and fictitious 'dark ages . Over the years, the SIS has always assessed Velikovsky s contributions in an impartial manner, sometimes critically but generally constructively. In some fields, SIS contributors have developed his work several stages further and Chronology and Catastrophism Workshop ...

Are galaxies collections of components (stars and clusters) that revolve around a center of mass, or are they semi-rigid structures that rotate as a whole around the axis? Thinking the unthinkable? No, it s just a simple paradigm change. In the prevailing gravity-only cosmology each galactic component (stars and clusters) must revolve around the galactic center of mass a point unless one brings in special "posited" factors. Because galaxies are extended in three dimensions, unlike the Solar System with its planets orbiting in a plane, the orbital dynamics of stars and clusters revolving around a galactic center present a huge problem. Orbits will cross, perhaps collide, certainly become destabilized. Clusters would be disrupted. Spiral galactic arms are a ...
